Goodman, the reason I didn't talk much about the text is that it is a famous work. There are already several editions of Charity and Its Fruits floating around, they are just highly edited. Basically, the work is an exposition of 1 Cor. 13 and provides what I think is the best way into Edwards's thought. He focuses his attention on the question of virtue and what it means to become loving. When the time comes for the book to come out, I'll post some material from my introduction that highlights what the work is about.

What we are offered here, is your general summary or personal evaluation of what the book means, its import. Without however a complete presentation of the text's major points, in their own terms: quotes and so forth.

One might argue that your own evaluative summary is accurate, and suited to the spiritual needs of your audience. However? To keep the actual text at such a distance, in effect, deliberately keeps your audience in the dark. And exposes them to you, and your ideas of what you think they should know. But not to the text itself; God himself etc..

Which is not good. Even a child can learn to face some hard thinking, if given the opportunity. But those who are patronized, and protected forever from such things, will perhaps never discover the text itself; they are even actively prevented from doing so.

So? Could we here engage the text itself, more fully, and on its own terms? In its fuller complexity? With, for a start, a few quotes from the text itself?

KYLE:

Congratulations on your publication!

Would you care to summarize the book in a few pages? That would give us some material to work from. For a discussion, etc..

Probably people would like to hear something on Kent's book too.
