David,

I am with you on this. The movement of our Church calendar, not only in advent season, seems to point us to continual celebration. Rather than having a day (or two) to spend with your family, the liturgical structure offers a much more holistic movement of celebration for the Church.

It is a very beautiful tradition that may not bear heavily enough upon the evangelical life.

Happy Second Sunday of Advent :)

Hey Zen,

Nice post. Thanks for it. I too am dismayed by the way we (myself include) approach the advent season. The celebratory nature of it is great, but it is short lived. My family and I celebrate Hanukkah (I am an ethnic Jew) and I am somewhat embarrassed to say that I and my children are often more excited about it than about Christmas. I wonder if part of the problem here is our reducing Christmas to just one day. Hanukkah is an eight day holiday, and perhaps its length is part of the reason my family and I seem to enjoy it more. My Roman Catholic and Anglican friends celebrate Christmas for at least twelve days and they seem to have the same celebratory attitude you talk about for much longer than I do. So, perhaps your remarks provide some support for a return (at least for me and my family) to the liturgical calendar.

Thanks again,
